Third Annual Congressional Conference on Civic Education (9-05)
Seven members of the Arizona Civics Coalition attended the Third Annual Congressional Conference on Civic Education. The conference, chaired by congressional leadership, brought policymakers, academics and leaders in Civic Education from around the nation together to discuss strengthening civic education.

Progress Report September 25, 2005
Goals
- Raise public awareness of the importance of teaching civic education and encouraging civic engagement to students in K-12 grade levels
- Collaborate with the media, civic organizations, institutions, associations, and members of
the public and private sector to promote civic education and civic engagement
- Increase support at the Arizona State Legislature for civic education and civic engagement programs
- Increase collaboration between the Arizona Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branches on civic education and civic engagement
- Outreach to business and other constituency organizations in promoting civic education and civic engagement
- Support a sustainable coalition that is encouraging civic education and civic engagement
- Support professional development for teachers on importance of civic education and civic engagement
- Gather and compile information on the status of civic education and civic engagement in Arizona schools
Accomplishments
- Created Joint Legislative Ad Hoc Committee on Civic Education
- Created Arizona Civics Coalition
- Increased involvement of State Legislators and the Superintendent of Public Instruction
- Revised social science standards for adoption by State Board of Education
- Enacted legislation mandating Arizona Department of Education develop standards for service learning and to encourage schools to utilize those standards
- Developed a website of links to Arizona Civic Coalition members and to provide updates on activities
- Developed multiple surveys to collect data on civic programs, civic education practices, and general attitudes towards civic education and civic engagement
- Currently collecting data from students, adults, school districts, and individual schools
