Arizona State Social Studies Standards
Statement sent to Arizona Department of Education Standards Committee 3/05

The Arizona Civics Coalition, a group of individuals and organizations committed to revitalizing civic education for young Arizonans, has discussed the proposed changes to the Arizona Social Studies Standards and offers the following recommendations:

  • High School level Concept 4: Add more emphasis at the High School level on student activism and active citizenship to build upon and more closely align with the performance objectives in grades 4-8.
  • In general, add additional performance objectives which will lead to purposeful skill development in the area of active citizenship throughout, for example:
  • Students will demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and commitment needed to accomplish public purposes, such as group problem solving, public speaking, petitioning and protesting, and voting.
  • Students will demonstrate moral and civic virtues such as concern for the rights and welfare of others, social responsibility, confidence in the rule of law, tolerance and respect, and belief in the capacity to make a difference.
